Dog owners must kick the old habit and begin to pick up your dog’s poo

Every morning or evening, in most housing area or community park, you will normally see a log of dog owners walk their dogs and at the same time allow their dog defecate along the road or at the park and happily walk away. Effectively treat public area as their dog’s toilet. That currently is the norm in our society.

On the hand, if your dog poo and you take out a plastic bag from your pocket to clean up after your dog, some may appreciate what you did and generally all will treat it as an exception now.

In reality we are now in the 21st century, all dog owners must now make that exception as the norm and treat that norm as an exception. In our bid to promote Responsible Dog Ownership via various events and Dog Obedience Training, we have been promoting that as a start. We are glad that many dog owners now carry plastic bags with them so that they can use that pick up their dog poo. Unfortunately, even with regular reminders, there are still quite a number of dog owners who visited events such as RDO Day simply let their dog poo and walk away, we wonder when will learn to be more responsible and start to clean up after their dog.

Recently, we at www.Puppy.com.my organized our 2nd annual trip to A’Famosa for a one night stay at the resort. Those who participated are allowed to take along their dogs and stayed at the bungalow resort. We have been stressing to dog owners on the need to ensure hygiene and clean after their dog at the A’Famosa Resort and yet we are sad to see some owners still happily let their dog defecate without picking up the poo.

We all know that old habit die hard and we will keep on promoting that and hopefully, thing will continue to change for the better in time to come.

Don’t Leave Leavings
Always carry a plastic “baggy” or two with you when you walk your dog to pick up any waste it leaves behind, then dispose of the waste properly. Failure to clean up after your dog is disrespectful to your neighbors.

Koi Kichi is one of the best Koi Book that I have read. The book is interesting to read and extremely informative. It is that book that lead me to build my first Trickle Tower and later learnt that slow flow rate of water through the Trickle Tower offer the best efficiency in nitrate removal from pond water.

Koi2Kichi will definitely be a good buy for koi lovers.

The last of the several independant F1 Teams

Come this weekend we will bid farewell to several independant F1 Teams. Two teams namely Minardi and Sauber will be taken over by Redbull Racing and BMW respectively. Coming to 2006 will also see the Jordan team loose their name to a new outfit.

With F1 becoming very competitive and having more and more races each year, it is becoming more difficult for such independant team to keep up with the escalating cost. Last year we have 17 races and this year, the number of races increased to 19. The ban in tobacco adverting in many racing track will also see many teams gaining less sponsors. Even BAR, British American Racing that feature their tobacco brand 555 and Lucky Strike in their racing car think it is better and wiser to sell their stake to Honda.

In the past, we too notice that it is generally difficult to keep independant team afloat. The Prost Racing Team formerly owned by Alain Prost went out of business, out of F1 without even able to find a buyer.

The departute of Paul Stoddart will no doubt have big impact on F1 arena. Paul being a very out spoken person often speak his mind loud and clear on many F1 issues. The recent one being his strong remark against the F1 President Max Mosley on US GP debacle. We are surely going to miss him.

Power backup for Koi Pond and Aquarium

After keeping koi for a while and invested thousands on koi, ensuring continuous supply of oxygen to koi pond and aquarium water become extremely important. Otherwise, your investment may perish after a power breakdown that cut off the supply of electricity to compress air pump. Apart from occasional power breakdown due to TNB problem, there is always a possibility that the main circuit breaker may trip after a heavy thunder storm.

Running a 120 watt and a 40 watt Hi-Blow compressed air pump to supply compressed air the the main pond drain a lot of electricity. To cope with the possible power failure, my first investment was a backup system that is connected to two giant battery that we normal use for big lorry. During normal time, the backup unit will keep the battery charged and in the event of power failure, the power reserve in the battery unit will be used to power the 2 Hi-Blow that serve the koi pond.

We soon realize that such power backup system is only good enough if you will not be away from home for more than 2 days. Even if the backup system is used to power only the 40watt Hi-blow, it can barely last for one day. For longer period of absense, such backup system is no longer good enough for ensuring continuous supply of electricity.

Finally, we concluded that the best way to counter such problem is to rely on neighbour or friends who are willing to come to your home to turn on the power supply if the circuit breaker trip. Having to have friends of neighbour come to your house everyday is quite troublesome. We solve this installing a fax machine at home.Whenever we are away from home and wish to confirm that the power supply is alive, we will just call our fax number to see if the fax machine respond. In the event that the fax machine fail to respond, we will then call our friends or neighbour to check the power supply physically and turn it on if necessary. I have been replying on this simple, cheap and effective method to ensure that compressed air is alway available for our pond and aquarium water.

In the end of the day, the question is do we really need a power backup system ? My answer to this question is my do not need one at all. The reason being any power supply failure caused by TNB rarely last more than a few hours these days. In my absense, my koi are not fed at all and even without any oxygen supply, they should be able to survive by at least half a day.

Yahoo add Blog Results to News Search

Yahoo recently add blog results to its News Search.

Yahoo Blog

The Blog results appear on the right section of the News Result page, taking the place of the sponsored ADs. Tried on the search and found that the blog result that it return is so much less compared to the dedicated blog search currently offered by Google.

Yahoo, Microsoft link IM services

Consumers using the Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger programs will be able to exchange instant messages, see the presence of their contacts, share emoticons and add friends from either service, the companies said. Interoperability is expected to kick in during the second quarter of 2006

Such is the latest cooperation between two giant Microsoft and Yahoo. Such action is quite apparent an effort against strong competition from Google that recently enter the IM market. In recent months, Microsoft and Yahoo must have lost a fair bit of their mail users to Google’s Gmail. Such alliances will no doubt improve the value of Microsoft MSN and Yahoo IM services.

The best race so far by Kimi Raikkonen

The recent F1 race in Suzuka, Japan last weekend was won by Kimi Raikkonen of McLaren Mercedes, the straight 8th wins by the Silver Arrow in year 2005. Kimi won it in style. Starting from 17th and finished to take the chequed flag by overtaking Giancarlo fisichella on the last lap. Such was the commitment by Kimi Raikkonen to put McLaren back into the fight for the Constructor Title after Montoya crashed on the first lap. Such superb commitment put Ron Dennis closed to tears. Who say overtaking is difficult in F1. With Kimi , it is definitely not the case. With this win, Mc Laren is now 2 points short of Renault and the fight for the Contructor Title will go all the way to Shanghai this weekend.

The Suzuka race initially look bad for the Silver Arrow. Firstly, Raikkonen suffered another engine failure in practise, his fourth in year 2005 which prompted Mercedes Boss Norbert Haug to apologised to Mc Laren again. Next, both Raikkonen and Montoya qualified badly due to rain during qualifying. When the race started, Montoya was brought out by JV of Sauber Petronas Team. Mc Laren bad luck just will not go further and true enough, Kimi turned it all around and won it in style.

Such superb show by Raikkonen reminded me again of another fantastic overtaking by Mika Hakkinen, another Finn, back in August 2000 in Belgian F1 Race. Read the quote below:-

Ricardo Zonta barely had time to blink. The young Brazilian was tooling around at the back of the field with four laps left to run in the Belgian Grand Prix when he noticed the red car of the race leader, Michael Schumacher, looming in the mirrors of his BAR Honda. Approaching the end of a 200-mph straight, he moved to the centre of the track to allow the German to lap him. But as Schumacher shot by, a silver car suddenly appeared on the inside of Zonta and passed both the BAR and the Ferrari. Then Mika Hakkinen – for it was he – drove away from both of them.

These two classic race will definitely stick in my memory for many years to come.

130 stray dogs, and still counting …
By CHRISTINA KOH
The Star, 4 Oct 2005

WIDOW Kang Gaik Kee, who made headlines years ago for spending her savings on her 80 beloved dogs in Penang, just cannot stop picking up more strays.

When she comes across abused, sick or abandoned dogs, she cannot find it in her heart to turn the animal away.

She treats the dogs like her “children” who respond to her love, care and gentleness.

Today, she has over 130 strays at their new home in a 0.8ha ram-butan orchard in Kamunting, near Taiping, Perak, which was given to her by a Samaritan.

However Kang, 64, feels increa-singly frustrated and worried with age catching up.

“Although I need dog food and money to feed my dogs, more than anything I hope to have someone, like a volunteer, to help me here at least once a week.
“I know it’s a lot to ask for. But if I die, I don’t know if there is anyone who can continue my work,” she said.

Feeding, bathing and caring for her dogs from morning to midnight is a labour of love which Kang has to do alone.

Her sacrifice began over 20 years ago when her husband died and she had no children to care for.

To ease her loneliness, she began collecting stray dogs, spending about RM50,000 of her EPF money to provide them shelter.

“I’m very grateful to people who have come forward and help al-though the economy is not very good right now,” she said.

She added that she was especially grateful to two people in Kuala Lumpur and another two in Penang who provided her with dog food and other supplies.
However, the widow still faces difficulties in making ends meet be-cause she usually needs to spend about RM200 daily to feed the animals.

To help raise funds for Kang, the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) is orga-nising a charity dinner at the Tow Boo Keong Temple hall in Ipoh on Oct 30.

Society vice-president Dr Goh Hue Lang said the proceeds would go towards the upkeep of the Kang’s shelter and the ISPCA shelter in Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah at Jalan Gopeng.

She said those who wished to do-nate should cross their cheques and bank drafts and make them paya-ble to ‘ISPCA’ with their name, add-ress and contact number written on the back.

For details about the dinner, call Doreen at 016-5608905 or Dr Goh at 05-5455933. Kang can be contacted at 012-5549716.

Dog2Bike Spring Coil

For Dog Owners who are too lazy to walk the large breed dogs and wish to cycle instead may want to take a look at DOG2BIKE spring coil. Picture as below.

Dog 2 Bike spring coil

DOG2BIKE spring coils meet both objectives – owners can now exercise themselves ,and with their dogs on their bicycles , under controlled conditions ( of safety ) , within their time constraints .

DOG2BIKE spring coils absorb a certain degree of the force normally associated with dogs’ sudden tugging and pulling . This will enable the biker sufficient time for his reflexes to make the necessary compensating movements to maintain balance .

Simple assembly , with high quality chrome-plating , makes this DOG2BIKE Spring coil a life-long investment for the development and health of both dogs and owners .
( Naturally , a skillful adult biker and an obedient dog are required as a ‘safe’ team )

With Google, Life is so much easier

Google has been launching new services now and then and I must say that tools and new features offer by Google are really useful.

  • Google Desktop Search make the search function of Windows obsolete. With
Google Desktop Search, searching documents, mail, web history, files are so
fast. I have also set the Desktop Search to crawl all my network drives and
getting what I want is now matter of seconds and not minutes. I no longer
need to use the Microsoft Outlook search to locate my mail. Thumb up to
Google for saving tons of my time.
  • Picasa2 is another great free software by Google.  I find that the
export function of Picasa2 is particular useful. With that I am able to
resize some 500 pictures in just of 40 minutes. That is simply not quite
possible with other graphic editing software such as Photoshop.
  • Gmail is no doubt one of the best Google’s offer so far and it is just
getting much better, bigger space. Now with auto-save and customized from
features. Even Yahoo’ Mail Plus at USD 19.99 a year is  no match to
    Google’s Gmail.
