Send $$$: PayPal to offer paying by text message

Online payment company PayPal is preparing to offer a service that will let consumers make purchases or money transfers using simple text messaging via mobile phones, the company said on Wednesday.

The move by PayPal, a unit of online auctioneer eBay, marks a big step in bridging the worlds of e-commerce and the physical world of brick-and-mortar stores by giving consumers a pay-as-you-go option via phones, analysts said.

The service, known as PayPal Mobile, will be launched in the next couple of weeks in the United States, Canada and Britain. Other markets worldwide will follow for the world’s biggest online payments service.

“PayPal is going to be launching a mobile-payments product,” PayPal spokeswoman Sara Bettencourt told Reuters.

Yahoo launches instant-message phone in U.S.

Yahoo on Tuesday said it is launching a service in the United States that lets people make phone calls through the company’s instant messaging software.

Available in several other countries since December, the service allows people to make calls from their computers for 2 cents a minute or less to the top 30 national phone markets, including the United States.

The “Phone Out” service also allows calls from computers to regular phones at varying rates to a total of 180 countries.

Using instant messaging for phone calls is one of the latest ways that technology companies are finding cheaper ways to allow people to talk all over the world without relying on traditional phone networks.

“Right now the competition is just about cheap voice calls,” Forrester Research analyst Maribel Lopez said.

Undercutting Skype?
The move also attempts to undercut rates offered by Skype, a similar service offered by eBay.

Yahoo Messenger with Voice rates average between 20 percent and 30 percent lower than those charged by Skype to many major markets outside the United States, according to a comparison furnished by Yahoo.

voip stunt

I have been trying out VOIP Stunt via PC and it works great. The Linksys ATA offer two lines and each line can configure to work with one VOIP Stunt Account and by connecting these two lines to the keyphone system in the office, fellow office workers will be able to call using them and hence enjoy substantial saving especially on calls to other cities in Malaysia.

We have so far tested with two lines with one streamyx connection account and the quality is extremely good.

Not to forget that to enjoy those free calls, there is a need to make a payment of 10 Euro per VOIP Stunt account that will last you up to four months if you do not make calls to places that VOIP Stunt charge minimal fee.

Microsoft launched Office Live Beta (http://officelive.microsoft.com) and the entry level Office Live Basics is free. It will be free as long as the user use within the provided resources and does not exceed the bandwidth usage of 10GB per month. However, 10GB bandwidth allocation is definitely enough for 5 emails and a simple web site.

Gmail for Domain

Google officially announced a beta program to offer Gmail for Domain for companies which need the service by filling up the form available at https://www.google.com/hosted/Home. Google is also now an ICANN-accredited registrar of domain names.

Yahoo has been offering the services for quite a long time but I still find that Google Gmail is more easy to use and much faster. Many Internet users has signed up and use Gmail for their personal use. Introducing Gmail for domain will increase the usage of Gmail services and many small and medium firms will surely adopt the Gmail services with Domain.

Google has been offering Gmail Solutions to San Jose City College and their login screen can be viewed HERE

Microsoft has also been offering the same service via Microsoft Live but again the Web Email interface is not as attractive as that of Gmail. As the way it go, Google will likely win the keen competition in this area.

Trillian Web Chat Client

Trillianâ„¢ is a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. BeinSync

I have been using FolderShare for quite a while and found it to be extremely useful. However, the Basic Version which can be subscribe for free can handle up to 10 libraries and each library can synchronize up to 10,000 file. Hence I finally pay USD 6.95 to try out BeinSync for a month. After installing beinsync and has been running it over aa period of two weeks and I simply do not know why beinsync has merely synchronize some few hundred MB so far. On the other hand, foldershare has been able to synchronized up to 20GB of data troughout the same period.

As such, I am not likely to continue the subscription with beinsync and wil continue to rely on FolderShare for remote synchronization. Hopefully, the Pro version of the FolderShare will be available for registration again in the near future.

AOL to stick with Google

Google may pay $1 billion for a 5 percent stake in America Online as part of an exclusive deal with Time Warner that would strengthen ties with the search giant instead of dumping Google for Microsoft.

As part of the current negotiations with Google, AOL would be able to sell additional ads for its search engine also powered by Google on top of those provided by Google, according to a report Friday in The Wall Street Journal Online. Google also could promote AOL Web sites among sponsored links in search results, according to an unidentified source in the report. The report said the deal would not be finalized until after Time Warner’s board meets on Wednesday.

Screen shot of Yahoo Mail Beta

Yahoo mail beta

A link to Yahoo Mail Beta is there when I login into Yahoo mail today. The new yahoo mail interface look very much like those of our desktop email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and it allow user to drag mail to folder, deleting mail by hitting the delete button or select a range of mail to delete. A quick check found that Rules and Wizard is still not available in Yahoo mail. The Yahoo Mail Filter still basically allow users to move mail that meet certain rules to designated folder. On the contrary, Google Gmail has a very powerful filter allow user set a wide range of rules and action.

Will post more information after testing the beta for several days.

Folder Share – a great folder synchronization services

FolderShare is one synchronization service that I tried and used for more than 2 weeks. I have set FolderShare to synchronize 10 folders (20GB) of my office PC and home PC and it just work beautifully. With that I can do away with thumb drive that I normally carry with the files that use very regularly. FolderShare by Byte Taxi has been acquired by Microsoft and the Basic version is now being offered for free. The limitation of the basic version allow you to synchronize folder with up to 10,000 files. This is surely one service that will help many to increase their productivity.

Folder share can be downloaded at www.foldershare.com

I have also subscribed to www.beinsync.com paying USD 6.95 per month and will install on my PC soon. The reason to try out Beinsync is the ability of Beinsync to synchronize Outlook File and at the same time it can handle folder with more than 10,000 files.

POP File for fighting Spam

I have tried many spam control software and recently found POP file, installed it and tried it out. Briefly, the POP File is:-

POPFile is an automatic mail classification tool. Once properly set up and trained, it will scan all email as it arrives and classify it based on your training. You can give it a simple job, like separating out junk e-mail, or a complicated one—like filing mail into a dozen folders. Think of it as a personal assistant for your inbox.

POP File

Installation and configuration is easy and the profile server basically like a proxy and process all incoming mail, classify it. Substantial reclassification is needed initially to train the POP File and after about a period of 2 weeks, you will notice that the accuracy is well above 98%.

I have tried POP File on two mail boxes, one with small email volume ( 100 mails a day) and one with substantial volume (about 1000 mails a day). Working on first box is easy but working with the later mail box require substantial work to perform reclassification within the first two weeks. POP File is now at version v0.22.3 and more are to come in the future. POP File is free to download and use and you many want to donate if you find the software is good.
